First impressions matter! Studies have shown that during the average interview most interviewers have already made a decision about the candidate within the first ten seconds. The way you dress is critical in influencing this first impression. Many corporate recruiting experts would also agree with this view. Your choice of outfit should be neither too casual nor flashy. In fact, it is much more important that you are clean and neat. Wear the clothes that fit properly and are appropriate to your body type. Wearing wrinkled clothes would give the impression that you are not terribly concerned about your appearance and therefore may reflect on your work habits. The suit is considered to be one of the best choices to wear to an interview for both men and women. The suit should be subtle in style and allow you to look your best. The suit can be a symbol of wealth, power and confidence. It also depicts success. Because of all this, a suit will help you to make your presence felt in any interview. It should not be a problem if the suit is black or coloured. What is more important is that the colour should be conservative and the design should be simple. It should ideally be entirely of one colour. Be aware that in some countries, certain cultural beliefs do not allow the wearing of a completely black outfit. This can be overcome by the wearing of a contrasting shirt or blouse with the suit, such as a pale blue or white. A black suit is generally the best choice as it looks conservative and will suit most body types. Most experts would advise women to steer clear of the obviously trendy outfits and so too should men. As well as the suit accessories can also be worn. The rule is the same for them ? not too flashy and err on the side of moderation. Accessories should be viewed as enhancements, not the dominant feature of an outfit. Acceptable accessories include a simple yet stylish watch, one or two small rings and a small bracelet for the wrist. The accessories that can be worn for the interview include just a watch, subtle rings or a thin and very unobtrusive bracelet on the wrist. Women by necessity need to take more care with their accessories. In some cases they may have to remove items that they normally wear, such as nose rings, dangling earrings or flashy bracelets and necklaces. However, women can wear at least a small amount of jewelery, provided it is not too noticeable or a distraction to the interviewer. Your choice of footwear should also be considered. It should be hard wearing and should be of a design that provides the appropriate support to the feet. When wearing them you should be able to walk properly and comfortably. Shoes should not slip from the feet and as such the ideal footwear to have is closed in shoes. Your clothes and accessories should not overpower your personality. The attention of the interviewers should be on what you have to say during the interview and not what you are wearing.
