He was poverty-stricken at times, and he had to get meaningless jobs at times to provide for his wife and himself. The dream of writing was never far from his mind, though.

The key to overcoming is to figure out what's holding you back. Joe had an inward struggle. No one in his family was into books. No one wrote books. No one had a passion for reading. He was the outsider. It took a move of 2,000 miles for Joe to get far enough from the struggle to overcome his issues with poverty.
